As with any great photo shoot site, the museum’s appeal begins with its location. It sits very conveniently in the heart of Washington’s historic Chinatown neighborhood, meaning many of DC’s famous monuments and other Smithsonian museums are a short walk away. That makes it a great place to start your session. You can get awesome photos there and then move on to some of Washington’s other iconic landmarks.

Your Washington DC wedding photographer might not even have to venture outside the museum’s door to give you unforgettable pictures, though. The American Art Museum DC is, all by itself, a fantastic location for getting beautiful photos of you and your intended. It is dedicated to showcasing the breadth and diversity of artistic expression in the United States from its founding to the present day. What this means for your couples portraits is that the space is filled with all sorts of unique and colorful pieces. They make dazzling and creative backgrounds in the pictures we create of you celebrating your plans to spend the rest of their lives together. If you schedule a part of your engagement session at at the American Art Museum DC, you are sure to get one-of-a-kind photos.

We can guarantee your photos will be unique because we have photographed couples at the museum on several occasions. And every time we have been there, we have found new ways to capture their love on film. The vibrancy of the place continually fuels our creativity. It encourages us to find stunning and daring ways to weave our couples into the artwork displayed in the space. And it has led to some of the best work of our careers. We captured one of our most inventive images there a few years ago — a picture that won several industry awards. We photographed future spouses in a very unique pose in front of a vertically striped, multihued painting. The resulting picture was the type that any couple looking for a special engagement portrait would love.

We also love this particular picture, which we captured on film in a different part of the American Art Museum. The installation in the background is actually one of several pieces of video art displayed on the building’s top floor. As we explored the museum with the couple, looking for new and unique spaces in which to pose them, we happened upon a darkened room in which a largely blank white film was playing on a screen on the back wall. The monochromatic color scheme gave us the idea to create a black-and-white silhouette photo of the couple. We asked them to embrace, lean in close and kiss lightly.

That last element ended up being critical to the success of this shot. The way that the future spouses are kissing sweetly and almost chastely allowed the remainder of our creative vision to unfold perfectly. Though passionate kisses can look great on film, they can be problematic when done in shots in which the couple is silhouetted. With only the contours of the pair visible, it can be hard to tell where one person begins and the other ends if they are pressed together too tightly. When spouses-to-be kiss like these two did, however, the resulting image looks great. It is clear what they are doing. It is obvious that they love one another very much. But each silhouette is distinct from the other and you can see which one is which.

Versatile Photoshoot Locations in DC

One last thing that the American Art Museum DC an ideal site for couples portraits sessions is the fact that it is colocated with another great museum. The National Portrait Gallery — also a part of the Smithsonian network — shares the same building. That particular institution houses some of the most iconic portraiture that artists have done of famous Americans. It is a great place to take pictures of you and your future spouse posing with important historical figures in the background. Because the artwork in the National Portrait Gallery is more traditional than what is found in the American Art Museum DC, a couples portrait session in the building housing the two museums gives you (and your DC engagement photographers) widely different options right next door to one another.
