DC Sunrise Engagement Photos

Are you and your future spouse looking for a way to make your engagement photos really stand out? If so, give some thought to posing for your Washington DC wedding photographer at sunrise. Yes, early-morning shoots are not always fun — particularly for those of you who are night owls! But the sky lighting up over the Nation’s Capital can be a dazzling backdrop for pictures of you embracing. When the conditions are right, you get images of yourselves in front of a glorious canvas painted orange, yellow, red, purple and blues. You will have pictures that are every bit as beautiful as the love you have for one another.

If you decide to schedule a sunrise engagement session with us, then you have the good fortune of getting DC wedding photographers who have trained long and hard to be able to produce stunning pictures in those kinds of settings. Before we started serving future spouses in the Washington area, our primary professional focus was nature photography. Though we now make a living through Washington DC wedding photography, taking pictures of the natural world remains a passion of ours. With that in mind, we are always happy to find ways to weave the beauty of nature into the images we create of you and your intended. Because we are always on the lookout for great locations in the DC metro area, we can promise you engagement photos in whatever natural setting suits you and your beloved best.

Sunrise and Sunset DC Engagement Photos

As we mentioned above creating photos of sunrises and sunsets has always been a particular focus of ours. Before becoming DC wedding photographers, we spent many mornings and evenings — in the cold of winter and the heat of summer — taking pictures of those natural phenomena. As part of that project, we scoured the area around Washington for the best spots to see clouds light up with color as the sun rises above or sinks below the horizon. We can tell you without pausing to think where you would be likely to get unforgettable portraits with the sunrise or sunset behind you.

Thus far, we have never found a better vantage point for the sunrise than the area around the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial and the Netherlands Carillon. These two Washington icons are situated on the bluffs that rise up from the Potomac River into Arlington, Virginia. As such, they have a largely unobstructed view of the eastern sky. That means you can get glorious photographs of the sun coming up over the city of Washington. What makes the spot even more special is that the resulting images usually have the DC skyline in the foreground. So in addition to a beautifully colored sky, you also get on film the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol lined up in a row. With those behind you and your beloved, your engagement photos can hardly be more Washingtonian!

The only problem is that the whole endeavor is fraught with unpredictability. The sky on the morning in question can be overcast. Or there can be no clouds at all. Both scenarios result in pretty disappointing images, unfortunately. Even when the sky cooperates, there are other challenges that arise. For example, the sun moves around the sky during the course of the year. As a result, getting it, the monuments, and of course, you arranged in a visually pleasing composition can sometimes be a little challenging.

Sometimes, however, everything just works out perfectly. And when it does, the results are unforgettable. As was the case with this photo session. We had a lot of good fortune when we brought these lovely future spouses to the Netherlands Carillon for their engagement shoot. Not only were there just enough clouds in the sky to catch the colors of the rising sun, there was a nice separation between the sun and the monuments. That allowed us to pose the future bride and groom in front of the sun while giving a space for the famous Washington landmarks in the side of the frame. We love the extra dimension this gives the photo. The eye lands first on the main subject — a couple in love — and is then drawn to the iconic shapes of the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol in the background. As we mentioned above, an engagement photograph does not get much more Washingtonian than that!

To keep the light from the rising sun from completely obscuring the future spouses, we used a photography technique that silhouetted the pair and turned the sun from a blazing fireball to a starburst shooting rays from behind the soon-to-be-husband and wife. What we (and they) particularly like about this effect is that it provided the illumination necessary to define the contours of their faces while still preserving the silhouetting we were aiming for. The rays of light also help draw extra attention to the main subjects of the photo: the couple.
