One of the most important things we do when preparing to photograph your wedding is having a detailed chat with you in the weeks leading up to your marriage celebration. It is critical for documentary DC wedding photographers like us to talk with you about every aspect of your wedding day. Because we focus so heavily on capturing the most important moments in a natural and candid way, we need to know everything that is going to be happening. Ideally, we would like to know this down to the minute so that we do not miss a thing. We aim to be ready with our cameras anytime something significant occurs.
Our wedding and engagement photography services are naturally the main topic of conversation with you. But as you discuss your photo coverage needs with us, a lot about things unrelated to photography tend to come up. You will probably tell us a lot about the Washington-area location you have picked. You might also talk about which makeup artist you will use and where you bought your wedding dress. You could also discuss any pre-wedding plans they have with your bridesmaids or groomsmen.
It is not uncommon for the complete schedule for your marriage celebrations to still be in flux when you talk to us, of course. For that reason, you might find yourself asking us for our opinion about some element or another. We are always glad to get these questions and are happy to help in any way that we can! One that arises a lot is whether you should do a first look before the wedding ceremony.
This is a question that is often hotly debated within the wedding photography. Some DC wedding photographers feel that it is a beautiful way for you and your beloved to share a private moment. Others believe that a first look is overly staged and misses the broader emotional impact of having friends and family there to witness your reactions. When we are asked, our answer is usually yes, provided that the schedule of the day allows for it. In our opinion, the first time a groom or bride sees his/her bride in a wedding dress is always a lovely moment. Despite the concerns about the integrity of the scene, first look photographs are frequently among those newlyweds value the most when they look through their wedding album years later.
We also recommend that you do a first look for another reason. As DC wedding photographers, we have seen and photographed a lot of couples tying the knot. We have also become very familiar with the ebb and flow of a wedding day. Unfortunately, your time on the day of their marriage is not entirely your own. There are so many details to attend to and friends/relatives to greet. As a result, you and your beloved often have very few chances to enjoy one another’s company. During the first look, however, you usually have some time alone. That makes it a great thing to have on a wedding day schedule. The first look gives you and your intended a few minutes to enjoy being by yourselves. You can take a deep breath and relax. You can also whisper a few words of love and encouragement to each other before heading to the altar together.
We took this picture of a lovely couple enjoying their first look before their traditional Indian matrimonial ceremony. Their wedding was at the William F. Bolger Center in the Maryland portion of suburban Washington, DC. After the groom finished getting ready, he went out to the wedding venue’s expansive lawn and waited for his bride under a shady tree. His bride came out a few minutes later, dressed in a vibrant red Indian wedding sari. She walked down the hill and slowly crept up behind him. Her groom could hear her and his anticipation grew with every step. The bride-to-be finally got close enough that he could feel her presence. She then tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around, saw her for the first time and gaped in delight at how beautiful she looked. They smiled at each other and embraced. And we captured that moment on film and created a memory that will last forever.
