“You know the party has really started when someone has a lampshade on their head!” This meme is so embedded in our cultural consciousness that it is hard to know where it came from. The best estimates trace it to the 1910s or 1920s, meaning it predates the very concept of a meme! So when we see a picture like this, we immediately recognize what is going on. You do not need to be a Washington, DC, wedding photographer to interpret the scene. The people captured on film are clearly having a great time celebrating something.
In this particular case, the bride and one of her bridesmaids were enjoying a celebratory toast between the former’s ceremony and reception. The bride and groom had just exchanged traditional Catholic marriage vows at Dahlgren Chapel on the Georgetown University campus. They and their wedding party then boarded a party bus that took them back to the bridal suite at DC’s luxurious Omni Shoreham Hotel. The trip from Georgetown to Woodley Park took a bit of time, due to Washington’s notorious traffic. The group was in the mood to celebrate the nuptials without delay, though, so the adult beverages quickly appeared and disappeared. So rapidly, in fact, that the wedding party contemplated stopping at a liquor store on the way to the hotel. Though they ultimately did not, the group did pick up some extra champagne at the Omni Shoreham’s convenience store before heading up to the bridal suite. That part of the wedding day was a dream come true for documentary DC wedding photographers like us. We love being able to give our clients reminders of the moments that make their marriage celebrations unique and different. And the entire wedding party piling into a hotel convenience store to buy champagne is certainly among the things that bride and groom will want to remember forever!
Not surprisingly, the pre-reception celebrations in the Omni Shoreham’s bridal suite got rowdy quickly. The highlights included the aforementioned lampshade on the head, lots of jokes cracked at the groom’s expense and the timely arrival of some McDonald’s spicy nuggets and fries. Needless to say, the whole scene provided lots of opportunities for these photojournalistic DC wedding photographers to create unforgettable images for the couple.
Spending time in that bridal suite photographing the festivities reminded us of some advice that we like to give to couples like you. As you plan your marriage celebrations, make sure to build in time for you, your beloved and your friends to enjoy yourselves. So much of your time on your wedding day is not your own. It is very likely that you will spend a lot of the day getting prepared for the next portion, making sure your family and friends are taken care of and attending to last-minute details. Having a period of time carved out for just fun can really help keep your stress level down. It can also help remind you of what makes your wedding so special. It is not just about the two of you getting married. It is also about all the people who love you coming together to celebrate your union. Spending some time with those closest to you will allow you to enjoy that aspect so much more. Finally, having some time to party with your friends and family will give your Washington, DC, wedding photographer the opportunity to give you some pictures you will treasure forever!
The couple were not the only ones who appreciated just how special and appealing the moment captured here was. The prestigious Fearless Photographers organization chose this out of thousands of submissions to be in its Fearless Collection 52. It was an enormous honor for us, and we are tremendously grateful to the judges for having selected one of our photos.
