Washington, DC is obviously a great place for weddings. The nation’s capital is home to dozens of hotels, museums and other marriage celebration venues that fit every taste and styles. From our perspective as wedding photographers, of course, we love the proximity of the monuments and Smithsonian museums. Those iconic locations make getting beautiful images of newlyweds so easy and fun!
What many prospective clients don’t realize about the DC area, however, is how close it is to some really lovely locations that offer brides and grooms a more rustic and rural setting for their matrimonial celebrations. The Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia’s burgeoning wine industry are both within an hour of the city center, meaning those planning to say “I do” amid rolling green fields have a lot of great options. We are always excited to take pictures at these events, because weaving nature and the natural world into our photography has been integral to our photographic approach since we first picked up cameras.
One pastoral venue at which we really loved working was Khimaira Farm in Luray, Virginia. Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, the facility is home to a working goat and dairy farm committed to promoting sustainability, supporting local businesses and protecting the environment. Sweetening the deal for future brides and grooms is the property’s proximity to attractions such as Luray Caverns, the Appalachian Trail, the Shenandoah River and numerous horse farms, as well as a wealth of cabins and bed and breakfasts in which guests can stay. Throw in a first-rate staff and an understated elegance and you’ve got a really great place to celebrate a marriage! But don’t just take our word for it. Virginia Living Magazine has rated Khimaira Farm among its best places to hold a wedding every year since 2013.
The setting was a perfect fit for this lovely bride and groom who actually met while hiking on the Appalachian Trail. The natural beauty of rural Virginia was such a part of their love story that getting hitched in that area was an obvious choice for them. They were also a very laid-back and fun-loving couple, so tying the knot outdoors at Khimaira Farm gave their whole marriage celebration a looser vibe that fit their tastes and reflected their personalities quite perfectly.
That their guests also loved the atmosphere became quite clear as soon as the reception started and the dance floor opened up. The bridesmaids and groomsmen, flower girls, family members and other assorted friends flooded the floor at the center of the converted barn and got crazy to the beat laid down by the DJ. People were twirling and swirling in the late-afternoon sun, and there was movement everywhere.
What we love so much about this particular picture is that it gives a sense of what it was like to be in the middle of that dance floor. We always strive to produce images that allow our clients to relive in their minds the sensations they felt on their big day, and so being able to deliver a picture that captures the giddy joy of this couple's wedding will always feel special to us.
