It’s hardly a profound thing to say, but weddings can certainly be stressful! The pressure to get everything just right — from the ceremony to the flowers to the reception music to the cake to the photography can overwhelm the nerves of even the calmest brides and grooms. And unfortunately, worrying about all those details sometimes makes it hard for the couple to enjoy what is supposed to be a happy occasion!
As wedding photographers, our advice to nervous future husbands and wives is to try to find moments here and there amid the craziness to breathe a little, laugh and remember why they are there in the first place. A wedding day is always going to be stressful, but it is possible to find ways to cut the tension a little bit. And that matters a lot for their pictures, because no one looks good when they’re stressed!
We came away from this wedding with pleasant memories of how the interactions among the bride-to-be and her bridesmaids helped the former relax and come to the altar with nothing but positive feelings. In fact often times they made her look away from us, the photographers, to distract her from the fact that she had a camera pointed at her.
This future bride got ready in a posh bridal suite at the luxurious St. Regis Hotel in Washington, DC, located a few blocks from the White House, surrounded by a group of her closest girlfriends and female relatives. These ladies shared tears of joy with the bride when they saw her in her wedding dress and made the lady of the hour laugh when she was feeling tense. We were able to get some fantastic pictures that captured the genuine affection that these women felt for one another.
We love this image in particular, because it shows the raw joy on the faces of the bridesmaids as the bride-to-be pops open a celebratory bottle of champagne that the first-class staff of the St. Regis delivered for the occasion. More importantly, though, it shows how that joy allowed the future bride to relax ad enjoy her special day.
