We believe that choosing a wedding and engagement photographer to help you and your fiancé(e) document your nuptials photographically might be the most important part of your pre-wedding preparations. We are biased, of course, and make no claims of objectivity in saying this! Obviously, when it comes to planning your dream wedding, no detail is too small. You should absolutely spend as much time as you need to select the right wedding venue, wedding planner, DJ or band, caterer and florist.
However, the photographs that your wedding photographer creates for you and delivers to you are one of the only permanent reminders that you will have of everything that is going to happen on that most special of days. They are one of the only ways for you and your spouse-to-be to relive all the moments, the joyous and the bittersweet, that you will experience as you tie the knot. With that in mind, we would suggest that there are three main criteria upon which you should base this important decision: a potential wedding photographer’s cost, personality and style of photography.
The first one, cost, is pretty straightforward. Any future bride and groom should base their choice of wedding photographer in part on what they will get for what they spend. Wedding photography is not an insignificant expense, and you should find a wedding photographer who fits your budget and leaves you feeling like you got your money’s worth at the end of the day.
A wedding photographer’s personality and more importantly, how well it meshes with yours and your fiancé(e)’s, is often overlooked but is no less critical in your decision-making process. Your wedding photographers are among a handful of wedding professionals who will spend nearly the entire day by your side. We believe that that creates a unique relationship between the photographer and the couple, and that our job is much bigger than simply making you and your future spouse look great on film. We believe that your wedding photographer should also be there to get you water when you are thirsty, remind you of the time when things are running behind schedule and find ways to relieve the tension when you are feeling stressed out. For these reasons, they need to be people with whom you click on a personal level.
The final element that matters is a potential wedding photographer’s style. You obviously want to look your very best in the images that are captured on the day you exchange your wedding vows, so the photographer that you pick should be one who produces pictures in which you can imagine yourself and your intended posing. If you think that you look best in photographs that are bright and bold, you should choose a wedding photographer who sees the world that way. If you prefer to be captured on film in a softer and more understated way, go with a photographer with a more naturalistic eye.
Color is a very important component of every photographer’s style, and as you consider which professional you will select for your wedding day, look at how each candidate uses colors (whether in the background, in the choice of lighting or in the overall feel of the image) to bring out the best of the two people in the frame. If a photographer’s portfolio shows ample evidence of finding color schemes that complement the fiancés or newlyweds in the pictures, then the chances are good that he or she will do the same for you.
One of the things that we are most proud of regarding the photo featured here is the way in which we did that for the future spouses who entrusted us with their engagement shoot. Because the colors they chose for their clothing were relatively understated, we thought that it would look great to pose them in front of a really colorful background. As luck would have it, we had scheduled their engagement photography session at the American Art Museum, an institution in Washington, DC, that houses some of the most experimental, offbeat and colorful pieces of art that American artists have ever created. As a result, it was not hard to find a background like the one in this image. An installation comprising every color in the rainbow in all its radiance turned out to be the perfect canvas for the love story of this particular pair of fiancés.
We are very honored that the prestigious Fearless Photographers professional wedding photography association appreciated our use of color in this picture as much as we did. The organization’s judges deemed the image worthy of inclusion in its “Fearlessly Vibrant Color” collection, a group of wedding and engagement photos that use colors creatively and inventively in the stories that they tell. We are enormously grateful to have received this recognition of our work and the encouragement it gives us to keep striving to find new ways to represent the beauty of love in our photographs.
