Organizing a wedding in a rural location can be a fantastic option for brides and grooms who want the beauty of the natural world to complement and augment the beauty of the lifelong commitment they are pledging to one another. As the folks who are responsible for taking a couple’s wedding and engagement photos, we certainly do not mind when fiancés choose to have an outdoor wedding ceremony in any of the beautiful rural areas surrounding Washington, DC. Picturesque views and scenic backdrops make taking epic and magical wedding photos and couples portraits a piece of cake!
As beautiful as weddings in the countryside are, though, they do present certain logistical challenges for the bride- and groom-to-be as they plan their matrimonial event. Many rural venues are located far from the closest big city, meaning they are not near many of the amenities found in urban areas. For example, these ceremony and reception sites are frequently a long drive from the airports at which out-of-town wedding guests arrive. Similarly, it can be hard for a bride and groom to find hotel options nearby if the they have invited more family and friends than their wedding venue can accommodate.
Fortunately for brides and grooms in the Washington, DC, area, however, there are a lot of great options for future spouses who are looking to hold their marriage celebrations in a rural location within an easy drive of the Nation’s Capital. Northern Virginia’s wine country, for instance, is only about an hour from downtown Washington, DC, and offers prospective wedding clients beautiful venues that combine the elegance and modernity of the upscale venues found in the city with the rustic ambiance and natural beauty of a barn or farm wedding. Virginia’s wine-producing region is dotted with dozens charming vineyards at which future spouses can tie the knot and celebrate their nuptials amid the rolling green foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And of course, they, their bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, brothers and sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles, and other assorted guests can enjoy some delicious Virginia wines as they toast the happiness of the newlyweds.
The wineries of Northern Virginia also make great locations for engagement portrait sessions. The rows of grapevines and the gentle hills obviously make great backdrops for unforgettable images of two people who are in love and ready to spend the rest of their lives together. And the spouses-to-be usually have the option of making a day of it and spending a few hours doing a wine tasting after their wedding and engagement photographers have put their cameras down.
We took this particular engagement photograph at the Quattro Goombas Winery in Aldie, Virginia. This lovely vineyard aims to bring a bit of the spirit of Italy to Northern Virginia and to celebrate friendship (the name roughly translates as “four friends” in Italian). The grounds of Quattro Goombas were a perfect place to take couples portraits like the one featured here. The yard behind the wine tasting house quickly gives way to a gentle green hill leading to a lovely little pond. Everywhere we took this lovely future bride and groom, we found beautiful nooks in which to pose them. Whether beneath the branches of a tree in full spring bloom or tucked beside a rustic shed, every spot framed them beautifully and made them look as much in love on film as they were in real life.
